5G-Enabled Mission-Critical Communication for Railways

Indigenous 5G and MCX deployment on the Mathura–Chata corridor enabling safe and reliable railway communication

5G-Enabled Mission-Critical Communication for Railways

Introduction

Indian Railways is continuously modernizing its communication infrastructure to support safer, more reliable, and future-ready railway operations. As part of this initiative, the Mathura–Chata section under North Central Railway was identified as one of the first corridors for the deployment of a 5G-based communication pilot.

The 31 km corridor provided an ideal environment to evaluate how next-generation broadband communication technologies can support operational coordination between trains, stations, and control centers in real railway conditions.

Requirement

Modern railway operations require communication systems capable of supporting not only voice communication, but also real-time data and video services for operational coordination, monitoring, and safety applications.

The objective of the deployment was to evaluate a private 5G-based mission-critical communication network capable of:

  • Supporting seamless communication across the railway corridor
  • Enabling reliable broadband connectivity with low latency
  • Acting as a bearer for railway signaling and safety systems such as KAVACH
  • Supporting next-generation railway operational communication requirements
  • Building an indigenous, standards-based railway communication ecosystem

Deployment & Solution

The deployment introduced an indigenous 5G-based mission-critical communication ecosystem across the Mathura–Chata railway corridor.

Tejas Networks deployed the 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) infrastructure, including radio and baseband units, providing overlapping and redundant coverage across the railway section to ensure reliable connectivity.

Niral Networks deployed the 5G Standalone Core, enabling a secure and reliable private 5G communication environment for railway operations.

Consort Digital deployed its complete mission-critical communication ecosystem including:

  • MCX ONE Enterprise Platform
  • Cab Radios & Train Radio Systems
  • Dispatcher Solutions
  • Fixed Communication Terminals

The solution supports mission-critical voice, video, and data communication across trains, stations, and control centers. It is aligned with 3GPP and FRMCS standards and supports railway-specific capabilities such as functional addressing, location-based communication, geo-location, device management, and integration with  KAVACH and other signalling sub-systems.

Benefits

The deployment successfully demonstrated how 5G and mission-critical communication platforms can support next-generation railway operations.

Key outcomes include:

  • Reliable and seamless communication across the railway corridor
  • Improved operational coordination between train drivers, stations, and control rooms
  • Enhanced support for railway safety and signaling applications
  • High availability communication with redundant network coverage
  • Validation of indigenous 5G and MCX technologies for railway environments
  • A scalable and future-ready communication framework for modern railway operations

The Mathura–Chata deployment represents a significant milestone toward safe, reliable, and future-ready railway communication infrastructure in India.
